History
The Valatie Volunteer Rescue Squad was born in 1933, when Harry Smith organized the Squad, then known as an “Inhalator Squad”, to provide oxygen cylinders and first aid to local firefighters. Even in the midst of the Depression, the community supported us through donations and pledges.
1935
The Valatie Volunteer Rescue Squad received its name on January 10, 1935 and appointed Bill Hamm its first Captain. Four months later the Squad purchased and renovated a hearse, painting it bright red as its purpose evolved from death to life. During this time Bill Hamm, Wally Brough Jr. and Lee Sharp made up the core of the organization.
1941
November 1941 brought the addition of a Nash Ambulance and new members. By 1955, community support had grown to the point where the Lions Club was able to raise $10,000 for a new Cadillac ambulance.
1950-1970
The 1950s brought 24 hour/day dispatch, when Squad Captain Charles Pardee Sr. introduced a new system manned by members of his family. Pardee was a true innovator. In 1958 he used an old resuscitator and scrap tubing to make the first bottled air system owned by an ambulance service.
Throughout the 1960s, the Squad introduced new and improved services to the community. These included first aid courses, a CB radio-based communications network, and mutual aid agreements.
1972
To support growing communities, in 1972 the Squad moved to its present location. Our medical capabilities also grew. We became the first NYS-Certified ambulance squad in the region, built the first van-based ambulances, trained the first female METs (medical emergency technician – the forerunner to present-day EMTs), and introduced “Jaws of Life” to the region.
1980-2000
The 1980s and 1990s brought growth in numbers, expertise and coverage. In 1997 the first paid paramedic joined the Squad. Four members completed our first Critical Care Technician course in 1998.
Today, the Squad continues its tradition of leading-edge service to the community.
Future plans include new vehicles, a new building, and more extensive training for our staff and our communities.
